Gun activists shoot from the lip at rally
October 3, 2000
BY FRANK MAIN STAFF REPORTER
The presidential candidates have been silent on gun issues,
but their supporters weren’t shy Monday, shouting at each
other at a downtown rally.
As Mayor Daley addressed the annual gathering against
handgun violence, dozens of Chicago students yelled “Guns
Kill People!” while children from a suburban Christian
academy countered “Guns Save Lives!”
Afraid of alienating core constituencies, Al Gore and George
W. Bush have let their supporters hash out the gun issue, as
shown by the two vocal sides squaring off Monday afternoon
at the Federal Plaza.
Speakers at the rally, sponsored by the Illinois Council
Against Handgun Violence, called for tougher gun laws and
urged supporters to register to vote.
Gun rights groups, including the Second Amendment Sisters
and about 50 students from Christian Liberty Academy in
Arlington Heights, shouted down Daley and other speakers,
including Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood.
While defending the bullhorn-wielding protesters’ right to
speak, Daley told the hundreds of gun control advocates at
the rally not to fear the firearms industry.
“All of us should stand together,” he said.
Meanwhile, Wood, a Republican, bridged party lines, telling
the crowd she supports both “better laws and stricter
enforcement,” drawing boos from gun rights advocates for
calling for more firearms legislation.
Among the 50 or so protesters was Faith Mohoi of Valparaiso,
Ind., a member of Second Amendment Sisters. The politicians
on the dais are plotting to take away what Mohoi believes is
her constitutional right to bear arms, she said.
Earlier in the day, the gun industry’s leading trade
association, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, joined
Cook County Sheriff Michael Sheahan to announce a donation
of more than 10,000 gun locks to his office.
Sheahan will give 5,500 locks to his employees and issued an
order for them to secure their firearms in a lock box or
with a gun lock when off duty. He will give another 5,000
locks to Cook County residents.
