Utah Action Alert — January 14, 2000 –
Call, Fax or write your legislators today! Tell them NO GUN CONTROL
IN 2000!
You may recall Governor Mike Leavitt threatening to call a special
session for the sole purpose of enacting gun control this past year.
Well, the legislature is coming back in — and Leavitt is gearing up
to once again attack your rights.
There are five anti-gun bills already in the hopper, and many more
on the horizon, with House Speaker Marty Stephens assuring the press
that he plans on dealing with these bills IMMEDIATELY when the
session begins on the 17th.
Anti-gunners hope to ram their GUN CONTROL 2000 package through on
the heels of recent shooting tragedies — while emotions are still
running high.
This doesn’t give law-abiding gun owners in Utah much time to act.
Please contact your legislators right away and urge them to protect
your constitutional rights against these liberal anti-gun attacks.
The Bad Bills:
* SB 16 — A Lock-Up-Your-Safety nightmare. Keeps your gun away
from you in emergencies and allows for parents to be prosecuted for
the actions of children (teens included). Adds cost to purchases
with requirements to gun dealers as well. [As you may know,
NO-SAFETY ZONES contributed to the epidemic of school and church
shootings. Teachers, principles and parents used to be able to
protect children from would-be murderers. But when Clinton,
Congress and local politicians mandated SCHOOL NO-SAFETY ZONES (the
so-called "Gun Free School Zones") criminals knew they could target
defenseless teachers and students.]
* SB 79 — A plan to strip entire classes of Utah citizens of
their 2nd Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms. A ban on ownership
for misdemeanors! Under SB 79, mere misdemeanor “convictions” would
be enough to strip you of your rights for at least three years and
maybe for life. This bill also takes away privacy protection for
juveniles and makes it harder to prosecute those who illegally
disclose your information. Weakens YOUR rights and gives the
government more power.
* SB 87 — A ban against carrying (even for permit holders) in
churches, schools and private residences. Teachers, students and
church-goers to be defenseless targets when crazed criminals go on a
rampage. Leavitt wants to make criminals of the good guys — adults
with concealed carry permits protecting children at school or
church. The requirement of posting the rule is lifted, virtually
ensuring that some honest citizen can get snared by the true
anti-gun intentions of this bill.
* HB 161 — A Leavitt plan for BRADY REGISTRATION OF PRIVATE
SALES of guns at “gun shows.” If you buy a gun at a so-called “gun
show,” the Salt Lake Tribune reports that Mike Leavitt wants Big
Brother to know about it. This is the next major step towards a
complete gun owner database. Plus, anti-gun Democrats have already
moved the goal line. They think “gun show” registration is a sure
thing. ALL private sales may be registered with Big Brother. If it
passes, anti-gunners win and the result could close down gun shows
in Utah.
* HB 176 — State and Local Bureaucrats to have the power to
strip you of your rights in an ill-defined MENTAL HEALTH KANGAROO
COURT. Removes the “immediate danger” clause, opening up a whole
new slew of restrictions on you. If someone claims you are a danger
in any sense to yourself, them or any property — you can be
stripped of your rights.
There is one small light at the end of the tunnel — HB 199 is a
bill that would prohibit the state or its subdivisions from joining
any lawsuits against manufacturers.
As you can see, we have our work cut out for us. Use the following
pre-written letters and contact your legislators right away. Only
you can protect your rights!

The first one is to your Senator, the second one goes to your State
Representative. Please don’t wait — the anti-gun crowd sure isn’t.

Dear Senator:
Firearms are used for lawful self-defense over 2 MILLION times a
year. The criminal actions of a handful of out-of-control kooks
should not wipe out the Constitutional Rights of millions of
law-abiding gun owners.
I respectfully ask you to OPPOSE ALL GUN CONTROL IN 2000 including:
* Expanding BRADY REGISTRATION TO PRIVATE SALES at so-called
“gun shows.”
* Making teachers, students and church-goers defenseless targets
by making many public places a patchwork of NO-SAFETY ZONES.
* Any LOCK UP YOUR SAFETY provisions — they make my gun
virtually useless.
* Letting Bureaucrats strip entire classes of people of their
Right to Keep and Bear Arms for non-felony reasons.
I expect you to uphold your oath to protect the Constitution — so
please, NO GUN CONTROL IN 2000. Please write me and tell me what
you will do.
