One shot, two arrested in Spokane burglary

SPOKANE – Two teens are in custody and a third is in the hospital after
a burglary and shooting in a north Spokane gun shop early Wednesday
morning.
Dozens of officers worked all morning to track down two of the suspects,
thought to potentially be dangerous, who ran from the scene of the
burglary.
Several hours later, Spokane SWAT team members captured the suspects at
a Spokane apartment complex. Police said the suspects were teens, ages
14 and 15. A third suspect lays in the hospital with a shoulder wound.
The botched burglary happened at Brock’s Gunsmithing in Spokane. Around
4 a.m. Wednesday the owner of Brock’s Gunsmithing received a call from
his alarm company about a burglary at his shop.
When the owner arrived, police said one teen, who they believe is 18,
pointed a gun. Police said the shop owner shot the suspect in the
shoulder. The two other teens ran away.
A police SWAT team moved in on the store, not knowing if anyone was
inside. Traffic was detoured on Division Street, a main thoroughfare in
Spokane, for several hours as police surrounded the shop.
Thinking that two of the suspects were holed up inside a gun shop, SWAT
teams surround the shop. Meanwhile, the girlfriend of the suspect who
was reportedly shot told police the two other suspects were inside her
apartment.
“I think they ran after the one suspect at the gun store got shot,” said
Sgt. Joe Peterson, Spokane Police Department . “The other two escaped.
One of them has a cut on the head from crawling through the window. They
ran over here and then just went to bed.”
Police evacuated residents at the apartment complex. Resident Cassie
Claybrooks and her two-year-old daughter awoke to the sound of a SWAT
team.
“They escorted us down and they drew guns and pointed them at Apartment
#12,” said Claybrooks. “While they walked us out, they were walking
backwards with their shields up and their guns drawn. It was scary.”
Police said they arrested the two suspects without incident. Several
handguns were taken from the gun store. Police recovered one of those
guns from the trash outside the shop.
The owner of the shop was not hurt. Police said the owner will probably
not face charges because he was acting self-defense.
KREM 2 spoke with the owner of the gun shop. His only words were there
will be no interviews.
