Two men are in jail and another man previously on life support is dead
while Benton County Sheriff’s detectives continue to investigate
Friday’s botched home invasion robbery in Whitstran.
And two other suspects are being searched for in the Mid-Columbia and
Yakima River Valley, said Benton County Sheriff Larry Taylor.
Detectives also are investigating whether this type of crime — robbing
migrant workers — may have happened before elsewhere.
Aldo H. Arreguin, 17, of Yakima, died Saturday evening after being on
life support at Kadlec Medical Center after he was shot in the head
Friday.
Sergio S. Chavez, 29, and Daniel H. Villa, 25, both from the Prosser
area, are in the Benton County jail on suspicion of first-degree
burglary.
The prosecutor’s office is expected to review the case this week for
potential charges that could include attempted armed robbery and
assault.
Detectives have been busy since the bungled robbery led to a shootout
after four masked men waving semi-automatic pistols and an assault rifle
burst into a small home about 5 a.m. Friday in Whitstran, a small
community just north of Prosser.
Taylor said the two men were arrested without resistance Saturday
evening in Yakima with the help of Yakima police.
Police recovered two weapons suspected of being used in the crime.
Arreguin was shot in the forehead by a resident after the 17-year old
tried to use a hostage to gain entry to a nearby trailer.
Three other gunmen returned fire at the residence before running away in
a getaway car, which also was found Saturday. Taylor did not have
information on the make of the car, but said it was a mid-size sedan. He
said it would be searched for evidence today.
One of the residents of the home was treated for a minor gunshot wound
to the leg, others were treated at the scene for lacerations from
beatings. A total of eight victims lived at the location, which included
two small trailers in a remote orchard.
Taylor said the prosecutor would review the shooting death of Arreguin,
but he believed the resident was acting in self-defense.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Benton County
Sheriff’s Office at 735-6555.
