Separatists suspected in guns theft

French police are investigating whether the Basque separatist group ETA
stole 200 guns from an arms factory in southern France, a police source
said yesterday.
At least three men arrived on Monday evening at the factory south of
Nimes and told the manager they had taken his daughter and his two
grandchildren hostage.
They made him open the stockroom doors and helped themselves to more
than 200 weapons and spare parts.
“Several elements are leading us in this direction (towards ETA),
notably the nature of the theft and the team’s professionalism,” a
source close to the investigation said.
The woman and the two children were released yesterday morning in a
nearby village. ETA declared a permanent ceasefire in March after four
decades of guerrilla war to obtain independence for the Basque country.
