Special Alert

A Point-Counterpoint debate, “Should physicians routinely inquire their patients about guns in the home?” was published in the September 2001 issue of The Western Journal of Medicine (WJM), one of the most prominent peer-reviewed journals in the medical literature.

Dr. Tonya Chaffee, academic fellow, Violence Prevention Initiative, California Wellness Foundation, wrote the 700-word essay saying “Yes: Inquiry could save lives.” Dr. Miguel A. Faria, Jr., Editor-in-Chief of the Medical Sentinel of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) responded, “No: This inquiry is an invasion of privacy.”

Sincerely,
Helen Fore-Faria
Managing Editor, Medical Sentinel of the AAPS
