Subject: Now a full website: The World Wide
Web Gun Defense Clock

Hi.

Since 1996, when I first posted it as a single page, the World Wide
Web
Gun Defense Clock has become one of the most popular firearms-
related
pages on the Internet. By my latest count, there are over 250 links
to it
from other web sites.

The clock counts an American defensive gun use once every 13
seconds, and
documents that, “Every 13 seconds an American gun owner uses
a firearm in
defense against a criminal.” The theme of the clock is based on
data from
the 1993 National Self Defense Survey conducted by Florida State
criminologists Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz. Over the four years of its
existence, I have been adding criminological data, along with
references
to the primary sources.

As of today, The World Wide Web Gun Defense Clock has been
upgraded to a
full-fledged web site. The new home page contains the basic clock,
with
links to either the last version of the old page (the non-frames
version)
or a brand-new frames-based website, which takes a visitor on a trip
through its pages as a page-by-page tour.

The new website includes downloadable versions of articles by Gary
Kleck, John Lott, and papers from the U.S. Department of Justice,
including a newer survey which raises the question of an even
higher
estimate of yearly gun defenses. There is a new “Related Books”
page
with links to the Amazon.com catalog pages for books by these
and other
authors, such as David Kopel and Paxton Quigley.

My favorite of the new features is the “Gun Defense Registry,”
where
anyone who has used a firearm in defense may post their personal
experiences, where journalists and other media may find a
resource of
individuals to get in touch with when they’re covering firearms
issues.

I’m hoping that The World Wide Web Gun Defense Clock will
become a
clearinghouse for information on Defensive Gun Uses, and I urge
you to
visit it, link to it, and tell others about it.
